Portable cooling buying guide

Five checks, in the order that actually affects whether you stay cool.

1. Decide whether you need cooling or airflow

This is the only decision that really changes the outcome. A fan moves air; a chilled-air device lowers the temperature of the air. In dry heat under about 35°C, airflow is enough and you should spend fan money. In humid heat, or if you are heat-sensitive, airflow stops helping and you need the other category.

2. Read battery claims at the top speed

Advertised runtimes are measured on the lowest setting. Assume roughly a quarter of the headline figure in real use, and prioritise pass-through charging over a bigger number on the box.

3. Noise decides whether you actually use it

Most people buy a cooling device for offices, flights, wards and meetings. A device that is embarrassing to switch on stays in the bag. Test it on the setting you would use in company, not the setting used in the advert.

4. Portability beats specifications

The device with you beats the better device at home. If it does not fit a jacket pocket or a handbag without negotiation, you will leave it behind on exactly the day you needed it.

5. Check the guarantee, not the review count

Heat products are seasonal, so early reviews skew positive. A meaningful returns window lets you test the thing in real heat, which is worth more than a thousand five-star ratings written in spring.
